“Stevenson†is the title of a new film about Cuban boxer Teófilo Stevenson that will be directed by filmmaker Alejandro Gil.

The film will be co-produced between Estudios Churubusco, from Mexico, and the Audiovisual Production Company ICAIC, from the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC).

This was made known by the president of the Cuban state institution, Alexis Triana, on his social networks when he stated that “the respected Churubusco Studios have confirmed to the Presidency of Cubacine ICAIC the decision to co-produce ‘Stevenson’ by Alejandro Gil.” .

In addition, the Cuban leader assured that Churubusco representatives will visit Havana before the 65th anniversary of the ICAIC, to be celebrated on March 24.

“We thank Erwin Neumaier, general director, for the certainty that we will do the film project together,†Triana concluded.

Last month he also announced that Alejandro Gil had met with INDER directors to analyze issues related to the new film proposal.

In this sense, Triana considered the meeting as “an unprecedented event in several years for an organization of the central administration of the Cuban state.”

Osvaldo Vento, president of INDER, invited the filmmaker and the vice president of ICAIC, Yanín Martínez, to his board of directors and communicated the sports organization’s decision to support the audiovisual proposals about Stevenson with financing and fund management.

He also advanced the possibility of repeating this cooperation in another proposal of the seventh art about The Caribbean Storm, Ana Fidelia Quirot.

“Long applause for this desire to pay homage to our greats, and for this new beginning of collaboration between our institutions,†Triana wrote on the social network.

At the moment no further details have been offered about the process in which “Stevenson” is found.

During his career, the Cuban boxer obtained all the titles of the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA), was a three-time Olympic and world champion, and won 301 of the 321 fights held over 20 years in the ring.

His last victory took place in the World Championship in Reno, in 1986, and two years later he retired. The athlete worked in the Cuban Boxing Federation, of which he was its vice president, and in the National Commission for Attention to Retired and Active Athletes of the INDER. Stevenson died in 2012.
