FINA excludes swimmers from Russia and Belarus from the World Swimming Championships in Budapest

The International Swimming Federation (FINA) announced on Wednesday the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian swimmers, as well as all their officials, for the next World Cup to be held in Budapest between June 18 and July 3, 2022.

Through an official statement, the body chaired by the Kuwaiti Husain Al-Musallam reported that, as a result of his decision, the Russian Swimming Federation will withdraw all its aquatic athletes from all events organized by FINA that have to be held in 2022.

In addition, he announced the withdrawal of the organization of the 25-meter world championships to the Russian town of Kazan, which will be held in a still undetermined place on the same dates: between December 17 and 22.

Likewise, the FINA executive decided to open a procedure against the Russian swimmer Evgeny Rylov “for a possible violation of the rules” after his “alleged” participation in a demonstration in favor of the invasion of Ukraine in the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow.

Finally, he reiterated his “strongest condemnation” of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and insisted on his commitment to support the Federation of Swimming, Diving and Artistic Swimming of Ukraine in its preparation for the next competitions.
