Jes Staley has been fined £1.8 million for making misleading statements about his relationship with late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The British financial regulator FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) has imposed a fine of 1.8 million pounds (around 2.1 million euros) on former Barclays boss Jes Staley. In addition, Staley is no longer allowed to hold a leadership position in the financial sector, the authority said in a statement on Thursday. The decisions are initially provisional because Staley has forwarded them to an audit committee for review.

The reason for the penalties is that the bank’s former managing director gave misleading information about his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who has since died, the FCA statement said.

At the authority’s request, Staley had approved a letter from the bank stating that the relationship was not close. However, in emails he described the former US multimillionaire, who was at the center of an abuse scandal with some of the victims underage, as one of his closest and dearest friends.
