X Unveils User Location Feature in Bid to Combat Bots and Enhance Platform Integrity
The social media platform X,formerly known as Twitter,is now displaying the country or region associated with user accounts,a new functionality rolled out on November 22,2025,aimed at bolstering the platformS integrity and curbing the proliferation of automated bots. This marks a significant shift for X, which historically offered a degree of anonymity prized by many users.
X, a platform renowned for its real-time details dissemination and concise messaging since before its acquisition by Elon Musk, has long grappled with the issue of bot accounts. despite promises to eliminate these disruptive entities, bots have persisted, prompting the development of this new location-based feature. According to a company proclamation, the initiative seeks to verify the authenticity of content and foster a more trustworthy online habitat.
How to View Account Location on X
The new feature, dubbed “About This Account,” is accessible through a user’s profile page. Users can find it by tapping the signup date, which leads to an expanded information section. This section now displays several key data points, including:
- Account creation date (“Joined on…”)
- Account location (“Account based in…”)
- Number of username changes
- Connection route (e.g., “Connected via Mexico App Store”)
“This is an vital first step to ensure the integrity of the global public square,” stated a product manager at X in a public post. The platform has also incorporated privacy options for users in countries where freedom of expression is restricted, allowing them to display only their region rather than their specific country.
Protecting Your Location Privacy
Currently, the location feature applies to all public accounts, both verified and unverified. While initial speculation suggested location data might be visible on every post within a user’s timeline, X clarified that the information is only accessible through the profile page.
For users concerned about privacy, one option is to switch to a private account, restricting post visibility to approved followers. Alternatively, within the “Settings and privacy” section, users can navigate to “Privacy and security” and than “About your account” to modify their displayed location from a specific country to a broader region or continent.
The rollout of this feature represents a notable evolution for X, signaling a move away from complete anonymity in favor of increased clarity and accountability. While the long-term impact on user behavior remains to be seen, the platform hopes this change will contribute to a more authentic and reliable online experience.
