“My house was all this,” said David Barreto, an older adult, for Citytv, while pointing out what until March 8 was his refuge for many years. “We didn’t feel anything, we were sleeping with my wife, they came to knock on the door because the candle was already coming.”

From preliminary versions, a gas cylinder exploded in a house. “It was a roar at around 2 am. When I came out I saw the fire. We didn’t have the option to pick up our things,” said María, another resident, in a conversation with EL TIEMPO.

“I was sleeping with my family. A gas cylinder exploded in a house and the fire consumed all the houses, as they were made of wood. We are waiting for help,” Miguel stated for EL TIEMPO.

In the area covered in ash, the little that remains of a truck of stakes is parked, owned by David Barreto’s son, an elderly adult, whose house is in ruins: “I left it there and see… It’s all over.”

Firefighters report for fire in the Ramírez neighborhood

Sergeant Sánchez, of the Bogotá Fire Department, assured that the fire was about to be extinguished, there are only a few hot spots left to control. “They are investigating the origin and cause of the fire,” he added.

According to the authorities, since there were recycling warehouses in the area, this material caused the flames to fan: “It allows the fires to advance very quickly.”

The Mayor’s Office of Bogotá evaluates the situation to consolidate the number of houses affected and how many people are on the streets after the fire destroyed their homes.
