A fire erupted in the early hours of Monday, January 5, in Arenzano, prompting concerns for nearby homes.
The flames spread through vegetation between Via Aurelia and the Pineta di Arenzano, specifically in the area after the Coop roundabout heading toward the motorway toll booth. Authorities temporarily closed a section of Via Aurelia, diverting traffic onto local roads.
The blaze was brought under control around 8 a.m., though forest firefighting volunteers remained on scene to monitor the situation.
Forestry police are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
Flames Near Residential Areas
Residents expressed significant worry about homes located just meters from the fire, particularly those on Via del Lucertolone. A nearby petrol station also raised concerns.
Firefighters began battling the blaze around 5:40 a.m., but strong north winds complicated extinguishing efforts. The alarm was initially raised by residents awakened by the crackling flames and thick smoke.
Extensive Emergency Response
Fire crews responded from Multedo, the power station, and Varazze, supported by a tanker and a dozen volunteers from the civil protection forest firefighting department—five from Arenzano, three from Cogoleto, and four from the Ver group. Carabinieri and the Red Cross of Cogoleto were also present at the scene.
Officials considered deploying a helicopter if conditions worsened.
Fortunately, no homes or individuals sustained damage. However, as a precaution, firefighters advised residents of Via del Lucertolone in Pineta to temporarily evacuate due to the heavy smoke.
