The initiative of Nikos Androulakis gathers, as everything shows, the required 50 signatures – What is the procedure provided for by the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament

The die is cast. The initiative of the president of PASOK, Nikos Androulakis, for the motion of no confidence against the government, seems to gather the required signatures, after the positive response of SYRIZA. The no-confidence motion is expected to be filed on Tuesday.

Although initially the president of the official opposition party, Stefanos Kasselakis, in a video he posted on social media, called for the resignation of the prime minister and elections, then the representative of the party, Voula Kehagia, clarified that the motion of no confidence will be supported for good of the place. KKE, New Left and Pleussi Eleftherias are also in favor.

The decision on the motion of no confidence was taken in the wake of today’s publication of To Vima newspaper about “editing in Tempi”. The report says that the audio of the station master’s conversations on the fateful night is the product of two separate conversations being stitched together, and raises two questions: Who did the editing, and who else might have been aiming for it beyond reinforcing the narrative of human error.

How many signatures are needed to submit the proposal?
As provided by the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, in order for a no-confidence motion against the government to be accepted, it must be accompanied by at least 50 MPs’ signatures (1/6 of the MPs).

PASOK and SYRIZA have a total of 67 MPs. It is possible that MPs from the New Left will also sign.

What does the Constitution provide?

The Parliament can, by its decision, withdraw its confidence from the Government or from one of its members. A no-confidence motion can only be submitted after six months have passed after the Parliament rejected a no-confidence motion.

The motion of no confidence, as we mentioned above, must be signed by at least one-sixth of the deputies and clearly include the issues on which the debate will be held.
As an exception, a motion of no confidence can be submitted before the end of the six-month period, if it is signed by the majority of the entire number of deputies.
The procedure in Parliament
The debate on the motion of confidence or no confidence begins two days after the submission of the relevant motion, unless the Government, in the case of a motion of no confidence, requests that the debate begin immediately, which cannot be extended beyond three days from its start.
The vote on the motion of confidence or no-confidence is held immediately after the debate is over, but it can be postponed for forty-eight hours if the Government so requests.
A motion of no confidence is accepted only if it is approved by an absolute majority of the entire number of deputies.
