Home Explosion in Eibiswald Linked to DIY Firecracker Attempt
A 20-year-old man’s attempt to construct a firecracker inside a single-family home in Eibiswald, Austria, resulted in a notable explosion on Friday afternoon, causing substantial structural damage and rendering the building temporarily uninhabitable.
on november 14,2025,just before 2:00 p.m. local time,a detonation occured at a residence in the municipality of Eibiswald,located in the Deutschlandsberg district of Styria. According to a statement released by the Styrian State Police Department on Friday evening, the incident stemmed from the man’s efforts to create a pyrotechnic device using instructions found online. The man, a 20-year-old resident of Eibiswald, was attempting to build a firecracker when the device detonated unexpectedly. No other individuals were present in the home at the time of the explosion.
Emergency services – including police,fire department personnel,and rescue teams – arrived at the scene to find the 20-year-old resident already outside the house and thankfully uninjured. Authorities confirmed that no other individuals were present inside the dwelling at the time of the blast. however, the explosion caused significant damage to the building’s structure. The roof and the south-facing gable sustained especially severe damage.
The resident received on-site medical attention from emergency responders before being transported to LKH Weststeiermark for further evaluation. He was later released into home care. During the investigation, authorities seized precursors for pyrotechnic products from the man’s vehicle.
Following a thorough assessment, a building expert commissioned by the municipal building authority deemed the southern portion of the building temporarily uninhabitable. The expert determined that the structural integrity of the roof was compromised, posing a safety risk. The area surrounding the affected property was cordoned off to ensure public safety.
This incident underscores the dangers associated with attempting to manufacture explosive devices without proper training and expertise.Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosion. The investigation aims to determine the exact materials used and the extent of the man’s prior experience, if any, with pyrotechnics. The man is currently cooperating with authorities.
