Sharjah – In the first 15 days of Ramadan, 119 beggars were arrested in Sharjah, officials said. Efforts to combat begging during Ramadan have been stepped up in Sharjah. Police have requested the public to report beggars on hotline numbers.

Sharjah Police has been running a campaign against begging since the first day of Ramadan. Among those arrested are 109 men and 10 women, officials said. Begging can be reported through the direct communication channels provided by the Sharjah Police, 80040 and 901 numbers, the ‘Guard’ service available on the police website and the field campaign of control teams patrolling the roads of the emirate.
Police said most of the beggars exploit people’s religious and charitable sentiments to earn easy money. Director General of Media and Public Relations Department of Sharjah Police Arif bin Hudaib said that the total amount recovered from the arrested beggars exceeded 33,000 dirhams.
