The legend of the Bogeyman, a creature that lurks in the dark, is found in the folklore of countries all over the world under various names, such as the Sacamantecas, the Cuckoo or the Coconut, among many others. Lullabies, including the canary arroró, give a good account of its popularity, and with its terrifying presence and cruel actions, it serves parents or caregivers to threaten the little ones who do not want to go to bed. Childhood fears have their greatest asset in this born scarer, who feeds on the terrors of each one. A “blurred” entity that produces a “cosmic fear”, as pointed out Federico Garcia Lorcaand whose figure was even drawn by Goya in 1797.
Based on a short story by Stephen King
For the teacher of horror literature Stephen Kinghas been a source of inspiration and its most famous “bogeyman” is Pennywise, also called simply It (“It’s”). Without a fixed form, although its most common form is that of a clown, it feeds on the terrors of its victims. The original novel dedicated to his story was published in 1986, and has been adapted to audiovisual format through a miniseries that came to light in 1990, and in the film bilogy of Andy Muschietti Itchapters 1 (2017) and 2 (2019).
But the author has also approached this myth in other works, such as The visitor (2018), which was also brought to television in 2020, in a series format; and long before through The Boogeymanwhich is part of the book of stories the threshold of nightpublished in 1978. This short story was previously made into a film, in 1982, as a medium-length film, under the direction of Jeff Schiro. Now, this tale has inspired the eponymous horror film by 20th Century Studios y 21 Lapswith a release date for June 2 in the United States.

It is directed by the young British director Rob Savagewho with Dawn of the Deaf (2017) made it to Sundance and Sitges, where it won the Melies d’Argent for best short film. In 2020 he signed Host, a celebrated film shot during confinement about a séance that takes place through the Zoom application; and in 2021 he presented his third feature film, Dashcamabout two friends who embark on a road trip and livestream the scariest night of their lives.
The tandem formed by Scott Beck y Bryan Woodscreators of the post-apocalyptic film A peaceful placesigns the new story inspired by that of King, and which follows the Harper sisters, who are reeling from the recent death of their mother, without much support from their father, a therapist who is dealing with his own grief. When a desperate patient shows up unexpectedly at his home seeking help, he leaves behind a terrifying supernatural entity that preys on families and feeds off the suffering of its victims.
Sophie Thatcherfrom the series Yellowjackets, Chris Messina (Birds of prey), Vivien Lyra Blair (Obi-Wan Kenobi) y Marin Ireland (The Umbrella Academy) star in this title, whose first preview went viral this week, turning The Boogeyman: The Bogeyman in one of the most anticipated horror titles of 2023.
