New Delhi, April 27: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said the first batch of 360 Indian nationals evacuated from war-torn Sudan reached New Delhi on Wednesday night.

The violence in Sudan began on April 15 after weeks of escalating tensions between military leader Abdel Fattah al-Barhan and his deputy, paramilitary commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglu, over a proposed plan to integrate the Rapid Support Forces, a powerful paramilitary group, into the national army. happened

The warring factions had agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire on Monday. India began evacuating its citizens from the North African country the very next day.

Minister of State for External Affairs V Muralitharan is in Jeddah to oversee the evacuation process. The stranded Indians are first being shifted to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia as part of the government’s Operation Cauvery before being brought back.

At a press conference on Thursday, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan said that another 246 Indians are coming to Maharashtra from Jeddah. He said that we currently have around 495 Indian nationals in Jeddah.

He added that 320 Indian nationals are awaiting evacuation in Port Sudan.

According to the Foreign Secretary, there are about 3,500 Indians and 1,000 people of Indian origin in Sudan.

The two warring factions in Sudan have been vying for supremacy since they worked together in 2019 to overthrow the country’s longtime dictator Omar al-Bashir.

The violence has so far left 427 people dead and more than 3,700 injured, AFP reported, citing UN agencies.
