Beer is one of the most popular alcoholic beverages in the world, consumed by millions of people in Spain and the rest of the world. It is composed of water, malt, hops and yeast, and contains some nutrients that, consumed in moderation, can be beneficial, such as B vitamins, folic acid or antioxidants. However, as a general rule, the World Health Organization (WHO) advises against the consumption of any type of alcoholic beverage.
However, there are five groups of people especially who should completely refrain from consuming beer due to its health risks.
1) People with severe liver problems
People who suffer from serious liver diseases, such as cirrhosis or advanced hepatitis, should avoid drinking beer. Alcohol, present in beer, can aggravate these conditions and accelerate liver damage. The American Liver Association warns that alcohol can cause inflammation and scarring of the liver, worsening preexisting conditions.
2) Pregnant women
Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can have negative consequences for the fetus, since alcohol crosses the placental barrier. Health organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend complete abstinence from alcohol during pregnancy to prevent fetal alcohol syndrome and other developmental problems.

From the Ministry of Health of the Government of Spain warn: “Alcohol consumption while pregnant increases the risk of spontaneous abortion and premature birth. At birth these children may weigh and measure less, although sometimes this delay in growth manifests itself later. Alcohol consumption during “Pregnancy is the first non-genetic cause of mental retardation that, however, is entirely preventable.”
3) People with a history of alcoholism
Individuals with a history of alcoholism or substance abuse problems should be cautious about consuming beer and other alcoholic beverages. The American Psychiatric Association warns that alcohol can trigger relapses and complicate recovery in people with a history of addiction.

4) People with intestinal or cardiovascular disorders
Some medical conditions can be aggravated by alcohol consumption, and medical experts often advise against its intake in these cases. People with gastrointestinal disorders such as Crohn’s disease, heart disease, or uncontrolled diabetes may experience adverse effects from consuming beer.
5) People taking incompatible medications
Some medications do not mix well with alcohol, and drinking beer can interfere with the effectiveness of certain treatments. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other health agencies warn about the potentially dangerous interaction between alcohol and certain medications, such as pain relievers, antibiotics, and anxiety medications.
Moderate and responsible consumption for the rest
It is important to note that, even for those who do not belong to any of these groups, beer consumption should be moderate and responsible. Moderation is key to avoiding long-term health problems and ensuring that the enjoyment of this drink does not become a health risk.
