Boy Harsher to Direct Horror-Thriller “The Lonely Woman” Starring FKA twigs and Chloë Sevigny

A darkwave electronic duo known for their atmospheric soundscapes, Boy Harsher, is expanding their creative reach into filmmaking with their debut feature, “The Lonely Woman.” The project boasts a striking cast including FKA twigs, Sturgill Simpson, Will Oldham (also known as Bonnie “Prince” Billy), Jake Weary, and Chloë Sevigny.

The film, billed as a “bleak, sensual, and atmospheric horror-thriller,” marks a significant step for the duo, comprised of vocalist Jae Matthews and producer Augustus Muller. While Boy Harsher has previously contributed to cinematic projects – penning the soundtrack for the 2022 short film The Runner and licensing their song “Pain” for Terrifier 2 – “The Lonely Woman” represents their first venture into directing.

A New England Mystery Unfolds

Set in the rural landscapes of New England, “The Lonely Woman” centers on a woman grappling with the lingering trauma of losing her first love in a mountain tunnel. As a new disappearance rocks the community, she finds herself drawn into a chilling mystery and confronted by a “seductive and terrifying presence” lurking beneath the surface of the town.

The film’s visual identity is being shaped by Hunter Zimny as director of photography, and Madeline Sadowski, whose previous work includes Good Time and Chappell Roan’s “The Subway” music video, as the production designer. This creative team promises a visually arresting and emotionally resonant experience.

Expanding a Cinematic Universe

Boy Harsher will also compose the score for “The Lonely Woman,” further solidifying their artistic control over the project. This commitment to both directing and scoring underscores their ambition to create a fully immersive and uniquely stylized cinematic world.

The project arrives as FKA twigs recently released EUSEXUA Afterglow, a companion album to her January release, EUSEXUA, featuring singles “Cheap Hotel” and “Hard.” You can revisit Madison Bloom’s column “Hard Beats, Bondage, and Body Paint: What Went Down at FKA twigs’ New York Eusexua Rave.” here: https://www.thefader.com/2024/03/08/fka-twigs-eusexua-rave-new-york.

Boy Harsher’s most recent full-length album, Careful, was released in 2019, signaling a period of creative evolution leading to this ambitious new film project. “The Lonely Woman” promises to be a compelling addition to the horror genre, blending atmospheric sound design with a haunting narrative and a captivating ensemble cast.
