The flatback turtle, a unique and relatively little-known sea turtle species, is found exclusively in the coastal waters of Australia, New Guinea, and southern Indonesia. Distinct from its more globally recognized cousins, the flatback—scientifically named Natator depressus—possesses a characteristically flat shell and a fascinating life cycle. Life Cycle and Reproduction

Female flatback turtles typically begin breeding around the age of 20 and can nest up to four times during a single breeding season. Each nest contains approximately 50 eggs, a smaller clutch size compared to other sea turtle species, which often lay 100-200 eggs. But, flatback turtle eggs and hatchlings are proportionally larger—measuring around 5.5cm and 6cm respectively—potentially offering them a better chance of evading predators. Hatchlings exhibit a unique behavior, staying closer to shore in their early life stages, unlike other sea turtle species that venture into the open ocean.

Eggs incubate for around 55 days before hatching. The largest concentration of nesting females is found on Crab Island in the northeastern Gulf of Carpentaria in Queensland, Australia.

Predators and Threats

Flatback turtles face threats from both natural predators and human activities. The saltwater crocodile is a significant predator, with documented attacks on nesting females. Their limited geographic range and non-migratory behavior, while once thought to offer some protection, also make them vulnerable to localized disturbances.

Currently, the flatback turtle is listed as Vulnerable under the Australian Commonwealth’s Endangered Species Protection Act. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists them as “data deficient,” indicating a need for further research to accurately assess their conservation status. Lifespan and Ongoing Research

Determining the exact lifespan of flatback turtles remains a challenge. Current estimates suggest they can live up to 50 years, but more research is needed to confirm this. For many years, the flatback turtle was the least studied of all sea turtle species, likely due to the remoteness of much of its habitat. However, increasing awareness and conservation efforts are leading to more focused research initiatives.

The flatback turtle’s unique characteristics and limited distribution highlight the importance of protecting its habitat and mitigating threats. Continued research and monitoring are essential to ensure the long-term survival of this fascinating species.
