This year’s spring floods in Russia are the largest in the last few decades, the Minister of Emergencies of the country, Alexander Kurenkov, said today, as quoted by TASS.

“This year the floods are on record for the last decades,” said Kurenkov.

He is currently on a working visit to the Kurgan region, which suffered heavily from the natural disaster.

More than 17 kilometers of dikes have been built to protect against water in the Kurgan region. A total of 4,000 people – employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, municipal employees, volunteers and local residents – are involved in strengthening the shores. They remove trash and trees that clog riverbeds. Rescuers monitor the situation around the clock using drones. The evacuation of residents falling into the zone of possible flooding continues.

“The minister assured that rescuers will work as much as necessary, while noting the need to join forces,” his department said in a statement.

At the moment, 15 thousand residential buildings are under water on the territory of Russia due to the spring floods, writes BTA.

In 2013, in similar floods, the Amur and Zeya rivers in the Russian Far East flooded 13 thousand homes. At that time, five regions were affected by the incoming waters – Khabarovsk Krai, Amur Oblast and the Jewish Autonomous District. However, the area of the floods was larger then – 8 million square meters.
