Florida Gators’ Frontcourt Dominance Fuels Historic Start to 2025-26 Season

Florida’s men’s basketball team is experiencing a surge in frontcourt performance, establishing itself as a rebounding powerhouse early in the 2025-26 season. The Gators’ big men have achieved a level of success not seen in decades, driven by a core group of returning players embracing increased responsibility.

Historic Double-Double Streak

The Gators have been propelled by an unprecedented run of double-double performances. Florida has seen two players in its frontcourt record a double-double in four consecutive games – a feat unmatched since the beginning of recorded statistics in 1990. Remarkably, the team’s nine double-doubles this season have all been produced by its frontcourt players.

Chinyelu and Condon Lead the Charge

Most recently, juniors Rueben Chinyelu and Alex Condon showcased their dominance in Florida’s decisive 80-45 victory over Merrimack. Chinyelu registered his third straight double-double with a program record 21 rebounds and 14 points during the shot clock era. Condon contributed 20 points and 11 rebounds.

“The expectation is for them to set it every night,” said head coach Todd Golden. “They are two of our most impactful players, and we need them to play well for us to be the best we can be.”

Rebounding Prowess and Offensive Firepower

Powered by Condon and Chinyelu, the Gators dominated the glass against Merrimack, securing a 53-25 rebounding advantage. This marked the third time this season Florida has achieved a 20-plus rebounding margin. The team also finished with a commanding 22-4 advantage in second-chance points and outscored the Warriors 36-22 in the paint.

Florida’s most dominant performance on the boards came against North Florida, where they finished with a staggering 64-24 advantage, even securing 29 offensive rebounds – more than the Ospreys had in total rebounds. According to Golden, “It’s what we need to be if we want to be really good. When we play teams that don’t have the depth and the size, the physicality on the front line, but we do, we have to impose our will.”

Micah Handlogten also contributed to the rebounding effort, finishing with 17 points and 13 rebounds in just 19 minutes off the bench.

Condon’s Season-Best Performance

Condon delivered his best performance of the season against North Florida, scoring 25 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and adding three blocks and two steals. He shot efficiently, going 8-for-12 from the field and 9-for-10 from the free-throw line.

Clutch Performances and Defensive Impact

In a narrow 78-76 victory over Florida State, the frontcourt’s rebounding proved crucial in preventing an upset. Chinyelu secured seven offensive rebounds, including one off a missed free throw that led to a key three-pointer by Boogie Fland. As Chinyelu stated after the game, “We just go out there and make sure that we execute, get the board. Every night’s going to be different but just being able to embrace that path and know that that’s what we’re supposed to do.”

Despite a loss to Arizona in the season opener, where the Gators were out-rebounded 21-12 in the first half and ultimately fell 93-87, the team learned a valuable lesson. Foul trouble plagued Condon and Chinyelu, allowing Arizona’s Koa Peat to score 30 points. “We need to be the best front court in the nation this year,” Thomas Haugh said following the defeat. “We can’t let somebody like that come out here and score 30 points on us.”

The Gator frontcourt also demonstrated its defensive capabilities against Miami, holding ‘Canes forward Malik Reneau to just 21 points on 35% shooting, despite Reneau averaging 21.3 points on 64% shooting prior to the game. Condon and Chinyelu both recorded double-doubles in that contest, despite fouling out.

National Ranking and Future Outlook

Through five games, Florida’s frontcourt has established itself as a national leader in rebounding. The Gators currently rank first in NCAA Division I in rebound margin, rebounds per game, and offensive rebounds per game, signaling a potent force for the remainder of the season.
