Lane Kiffin to Florida? Ole Miss Victory Complicates Gators’ Coaching Search

Florida’s search for a new head football coach following the firing of Billy Napier has hit a snag, as a recent victory by Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels has significantly altered the landscape. The Gators’ pursuit of Kiffin is now more challenging, with his long-term future in Oxford seemingly secured.
The situation took a turn on October 25, 2025, when Ole Miss defeated Oklahoma, automatically triggering a one-year contract extension for Kiffin. This new deal will see the coach earn $9 million annually through 2031, totaling an estimated $63 million over the life of the agreement.

According to details shared by USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, December 8, Kiffin’s contract with the Ole Miss Athletic Foundation is now set to run through December 31, 2031. The added year is currently valued at $9 million, with $7.2 million guaranteed, and includes a $150,000 bonus for this season.
Financial Gap Narrows, Playoff Implications Loom
Initially, a significant financial disparity was expected between what Florida could offer and Kiffin’s current compensation. However, the extended contract at Ole Miss has narrowed that gap. Beyond the financial considerations, Ole Miss’s continued success – particularly their College Football Playoff aspirations – further complicates matters for the Gators.
A deep postseason run for the Rebels, potentially extending into January, would significantly delay any potential negotiations and create logistical hurdles for Florida, which aims to have a new coach in place before the transfer portal window opens on January 2. Teams are eager to establish leadership before this period to manage roster changes effectively.
Kiffin Remains the Favorite, But No Sure Thing
Despite the challenges, Kiffin remains the frontrunner for the Florida coaching position. However, analysts caution against assuming a done deal. On3’s Josh Pate, speaking on a recent podcast, acknowledged Kiffin’s status as the top choice but emphasized that his commitment is far from certain.
“I said last year that if that job [Florida] came open, I thought Lane would crawl over broken glass to get it,” Pate noted. “I did feel that last year. I don’t feel that as strongly this year. Although, I would still make him the favorite to be offered and accept the Florida job. But by no means do I think that’s a slam dunk. By no means do I think that.”
Pate’s assessment underscores the evolving nature of the situation, suggesting a “wait and see” approach is warranted. While Kiffin appears to be Florida’s primary target, the university must prepare contingency plans in case he ultimately decides to remain at Ole Miss. The situation remains fluid, but as one analyst put it, “it’s very much a Lane Kiffin job… Don’t overthink the room on that. And then if he says no, then you adjust.”
