Florida Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick indicted in $5 Million pandemic Relief Scheme
A federal indictment unsealed Wednesday alleges that U.S. Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick orchestrated a scheme to improperly retain over $5 million in federal funds intended for COVID-19 vaccination efforts and divert a portion of those funds to her special election campaign. The charges represent a meaningful escalation in scrutiny surrounding the Florida Democrat and her family’s healthcare company,Trinity Healthcare Services.
The alleged scheme centers around a $5 million payment made in 2021 to Trinity Healthcare Services through a contract with the Federal Emergency management agency (FEMA). Prosecutors claim that Trinity Healthcare, led by Cherfilus-McCormick at the time, improperly kept the inflated payment and subsequently transferred funds to benefit the congresswoman’s campaign.
