Flu Cases Surge in Switzerland, Raising Concerns of a Severe Winter Wave

A meaningful increase in influenza-like illnesses is sweeping across Switzerland, with medical consultations for fever, cough, and sore throat rising sharply in mid-November. Health officials are closely monitoring the situation, bracing for a potential peak around the Christmas holiday.
The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) reported that approximately 5,500 individuals sought medical attention for thes symptoms during the week of November 10 to 16 – a nearly 90% jump from the previous week. Together, laboratory confirmation of influenza cases increased by 30% during the same period, signaling a clear escalation of the seasonal flu.
Influenza Wave “ahead of Us,” Warns Health Agency
“the epidemiological indicators show that the wave of influenza is ahead of us,” a FOPH representative stated on November 19. Analysis of wastewater samples reveals a prevalence of influenza type A, including a particularly virulent strain previously detected in the southern hemisphere. This raises concerns about the potential for a severe outbreak, prompting comparisons to the recent experience in Australia.
Australia’s Severe Flu Season: A Cautionary Tale
Australia recently endured a particularly harsh flu season, compounded by a surge in COVID-19 cases, which placed considerable strain on its healthcare system. This confluence of viruses, officials noted, disproportionately impacted individuals who had not been vaccinated against influenza.
Switzerland Remains Cautiously Optimistic
Despite the concerning trends,experts in Switzerland are urging calm. Vaccinologist Alessandro Diana, speaking on the “Forum” program, emphasized that the current situation differs significantly from Australia. “We don’t have these elements at all at the moment,” Diana assured listeners.

Diana highlighted that in Australia, the majority of hospitalizations were among individuals considered at risk, a demographic for whom vaccination is strongly recommended in Switzerland. He affirmed that the currently available influenza vaccine “is good for preventing complications,” while reiterating that vaccination remains “an individual choice.”
COVID-19 Cases Decline as Flu rises
While influenza cases are climbing,the situation with COVID-19 appears to be improving. The FOPH reported that the viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater was stabilizing or decreasing across most regions of Switzerland in mid-November. The currently dominant variant, nicknamed “Frankenstein” – officially designated XFG – is not considered to pose a greater health risk then previous strains, according to the World Health Association (WHO).
Vaccination Urged for Vulnerable Populations
Even though a flu epidemic has not yet been officially declared in Switzerland, health officials are strongly encouraging individuals in vulnerable groups to get vaccinated before the anticipated peak around Christmas. “The ideal” time for vaccination, according to Diana, is “so now.”
The importance of preventative measures, such as barrier gestures – frequently enough relaxed as the height of the COVID-19 pandemic – are also being re-emphasized as crucial tools in mitigating the spread of both influenza and COVID-19.
