Flutterwave Partners with Polygon to Unlock Stablecoin Payments Across Africa

Flutterwave, a leading African payments technology company, is integrating with the Polygon blockchain to enable stablecoin transactions for merchants, aiming to dramatically reduce costs and settlement times for cross-border payments.
Flutterwave’s move to adopt Polygon as it’s default blockchain network for a new cross-border payments product signals a significant step toward wider adoption of stablecoins – digital currencies pegged to a stable asset like the US dollar. The company anticipates launching its Send App in 2026. This announcement builds on Flutterwave’s earlier 2025 commitment to joining the Circle Payment Network, further demonstrating its growing interest in stablecoins as a viable alternative payment infrastructure for global commerce.
“We want to make stablecoins another alternative for our merchants, something as easy and accessible as fiat,” explained a senior product manager at Flutterwave. “We’ll start small with a pilot group of verified merchants before expanding into the consumer remittance space.”
The initial phase will utilize USDC, the stablecoin issued by circle, with Circle also providing support for liquidity and issuance. Early adopters of the service will include major enterprise clients already utilizing Flutterwave’s regional payment solutions, such as uber and Audiomack.
Addressing Africa’s Costly Cross-Border Payment Challenges
Africa’s $2 trillion cross-border payments market is notoriously expensive, with average transfer fees exceeding 8% and settlement times often stretching for days. Flutterwave believes its integration with Polygon can fundamentally alter this landscape.
“Stablecoins on Polygon can advance settlement times from days to seconds and high fees into pennies,” stated the CEO of Polygon Labs.”It’s a massive vote of confidence in stablecoins as the future of cross-border payments.”
Flutterwave’s CEO and founder echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the company’s long-term vision of simplifying international payments for African businesses. “Businesses in emerging economies process billions in cross-border payments annually yet still face high costs and slow settlement times,” he said. “By partnering with polygon, we’re introducing a solution that makes international payments even simpler and affordable than many local ones.”
Prioritizing Compliance and Seamless Integration
to ensure a secure and compliant rollout, Flutterwave will initially limit access to the stablecoin service to approved and verified merchants, adhering to enhanced Know Your Customer (KYC) and Know Your Business (KYB) procedures.
“We’re working closely with regulators and will only launch in markets where we have regulatory support,” a company official confirmed. The integration will be built directly into Flutterwave’s existing API, eliminating the need for merchants to make any technical modifications to access the new payment option.
Polygon’s Head of Payments and Real World Assets highlighted the broader implications of the partnership, noting that it positions Africa alongside regions like Europe and Asia, where Polygon is already facilitating payments for companies like Grab and Mercado Libre. “Globally, more than a hundred fintechs are already moving money on Polygon,” he said. “This partnership with Flutterwave extends that innovation to Africa, where it can have a real impact on costs, efficiency, and access.”
for Flutterwave, the collaboration represents a strategic move toward “bringing stablecoins closer to home” – integrating blockchain technology into existing financial systems rather than attempting to replace them entirely. “Our goal is to make commerce within Africa and across its borders easier,” a senior official stated. “Stablecoins just take us one step closer to that vision.”
While stablecoins are gaining traction globally, regulatory hurdles remain a significant challenge in many countries. In Nigeria, the Securities Exchange Commission has begun taking steps to understand and regulate cryptocurrencies, but substantial work remains to be done.
Ultimately, Flutterwave’s partnership with Polygon represents a bold step toward a more efficient and accessible financial future for African businesses and consumers, leveraging the power of blockchain technology to overcome long-standing barriers to cross-border commerce.
