Flyers’ Briere Prioritizes Long-Term Rebuild Despite Playoff Contention
Despite a promising first half of the season, the Philadelphia Flyers are not poised to make drastic moves at the trade deadline, according to team General Manager Danny Briere. The Flyers currently find themselves in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff picture, but Briere insists the teamS focus remains firmly on building a lasting contender, not simply making a short-term splash.
The Flyers’ current success – a 22-12-7 record as of the season’s midpoint – is viewed by the association as a positive sign of progress in a long-overdue organizational overhaul. However, Briere cautioned against interpreting the team’s performance as an indication that the rebuild is nearing completion. “It doesn’t change the vision,” he stated ahead of Tuesday’s 5-2 victory over Anaheim. “It doesn’t change what we’re trying to do. It’s still about the future. It’s not just in the moment. Don’t bank on any rentals and to give up assets. we’re not at that stage yet.”
After five seasons without a playoff berth,Philadelphia,under first-year coach Rick Tocchet,has emerged as a legitimate contender in the competitive Metropolitan Division.The team’s resurgence is fueled by a core of promising young players, including 21-year-old Russian forward Matvei Michkov and former Ducks forward Trevor Zegras.
The Flyers’ playoff hopes are tempered by the tight standings within their division, where just four points separate first and last place. The franchise has a history of playoff struggles, having not hosted a postseason game since 2018, and hasn’t lifted the Stanley Cup since back-to-back championships in 1974 and 1975.
“We expected to be competitive. Maybe a little better than I expected, to be honest with you. But I expected us to be competitive,” Briere acknowledged. He also highlighted the unpredictable nature of the division, noting that a short winning or losing streak can dramatically alter the team’s position. “I love that at the halfway point we’re right in the mix. That to me is exciting for a lot of our young players to get that experience.”
Reinforcing the team’s commitment to its future, the Flyers recently signed forward Christian Dvorak to a five-year contract extension worth $25.75 million. Dvorak, 29, has quickly become a valuable contributor since joining the team as a free agent in July, posting nine goals and 17 assists in 40 games. He is currently tied for third in team scoring with 26 points and is on pace for a career-best season. “It’s a good sign someone bet on himself, chose us and wants to stay here,” Briere said.
The flyers experienced a painful collapse at the end of the 2023-24 season, suffering an eight-game losing streak that ultimately eliminated them from playoff contention on the final day of the regular season.
