Flying Lotus Announces New EP ‘Big Mama’ and Debut Film ‘Ash’

A new era for the acclaimed electronic artist begins with the March 6 release of Big Mama, Flying Lotus’s first project on his own label, Brainfeeder. The seven-track EP arrives alongside a forthcoming short film, with a teaser available now.

The project was conceived and produced in New Zealand while Flying Lotus simultaneously worked on his debut film, Ash, a science-fiction horror set to premiere on March 21. This dual creative endeavor sparked a deliberate shift in his production approach.

A Return to Raw Expression

According to a press release, Flying Lotus intentionally streamlined his setup, opting to compose solely with a laptop and controller. This decision reflects a broader artistic goal: to counteract the increasing “perfection” and “sterility” he perceives in contemporary electronic music. “As we get into a place where tracks are becoming more ‘perfect’ and things are becoming more sterile, I want to try to keep it interesting and try to keep bringing in things that are uniquely human to electronic music, which is, you know, becoming harder I guess,” he stated.

This pursuit of a more human touch suggests a desire to inject vulnerability and imperfection back into a genre often defined by precision. It’s a move that could resonate with listeners seeking authenticity in an increasingly digital landscape.

‘Big Mama’ Tracklist

The Big Mama EP features the following tracks:

  1. Big Mama
  2. Captain Kernel
  3. Antelope Onigiri
  4. In The Forest – Day
  5. Brobobasher
  6. Horse Nuke
  7. Pink Dream

The release marks a significant moment for Brainfeeder, solidifying its position as a platform for innovative and boundary-pushing electronic music. Fans can also revisit Pitchfork’s feature exploring Flying Lotus and his grandmother’s shared passion for music, offering a deeper understanding of the artist’s familial and creative roots.

With both Big Mama and Ash on the horizon, Flying Lotus is poised to deliver a compelling and multifaceted artistic statement in the coming weeks.
