Although it may seem impossible, there is last-mile aviation and it does not only refer to the possibility of a package being delivered to us by drone; They also say that the promoters of NextNorth, a company that offers the possibility of traveling in what are already known as ‘flying taxis’, fall into this category.

The firm has just started operating in the Balearic Islands, where it ensures that it can save its clients up to 80% of travel time, both to move within one of the islands and to move between them. To achieve this, its passengers will fly in eVTOL, an acronym formed by the acronym for Electric Vertical Take Off and Landing. That is, an electric vertical landing and takeoff aircraft. As reported by the company itself, “it is a more sustainable transport alternative than traditional forms of mobility since, through the use of clean energy to power the eVTOL batteries, they manage to completely eliminate the negative impact both on the atmosphere as in Posidonia (an underwater plant that is only found in the Mediterranean Sea), thus helping to recover ecosystems without reducing mobility service levels.

In addition, they maintain that these devices “will reduce the friction of travel by offering a mobility alternative to some of the land and sea routes, also reaching places where other means cannot reach.” However, for now, it has begun to operate with a Eurocopter AS350, a traditional light helicopter, to “detect the best routes and locations to later be able to operate with the aforementioned eVTOL.”

The firm emphasizes that the journey between islands will take just 4 minutes plus takeoff and landing and will cost 3,600 euros for five passengers. This is, 710 euros per person. Over time, the company has expressed its intention to lower the cost of these routes to 95 euros per passenger.
