Residents across the New York metropolitan area are facing a challenging Wednesday morning with a dense fog advisory in effect and an ongoing air quality alert. The combination of limited visibility and elevated levels of fine particulate matter is prompting officials to urge caution for drivers and those with respiratory sensitivities.
The dense fog advisory, covering parts of southern Connecticut, northeastern New Jersey, and southeastern New York, is in place until 10 a.m. Wednesday. Visibility is reduced to as little as one quarter of a mile in some areas, creating hazardous driving conditions. The National Weather Service advises motorists to slow down, use headlights, and increase following distances.
“Accept it slow and give yourself a little extra space and distance as we travel through the day,” advised Tony Sadiku, a meteorologist with CBS News New York.
Air Quality Concerns Extend Through the Evening
Adding to the weather-related concerns, an air quality alert remains in effect until midnight for New York City, including the boroughs of New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, and Richmond, as well as Westchester and Rockland counties. The alert is due to elevated levels of fine particulates in the air, leading to an Air Quality Index (AQI) predicted to exceed 100.
When the AQI ranges between 100 and 150, air quality is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. This includes individuals with heart or lung diseases, children, pregnant women, and older adults. Officials are concerned that lighter winds and stagnant air are contributing to the buildup of these pollutants.
“The concern there is because of the lighter winds, the air being so stagnant, officials are concerned that this is leading to some poor air quality,” Sadiku reported. “Thankfully, it’s not that bad everywhere. Most of the Tri-State is seeing air quality in the moderate range.”

Current conditions at New York City’s Central Park, as of 6:51 a.m. EST on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, show light rain and a temperature of 40°F (4°C). Humidity is high at 83%, and visibility is limited to 4.00 miles. Newark International Airport is reporting fog and mist with a temperature of 37°F (3°C) and visibility of 2.00 miles.
The forecast for the remainder of Wednesday calls for rain, mainly after 4 p.m., with widespread dense fog before 10 a.m. Highs are expected to be near 44°F. Tonight, rain is likely before 10 p.m., with areas of fog developing before 4 a.m. Lows will be around 35°F.

While the immediate concern is the fog and air quality, forecasters are similarly monitoring a potential winter storm system that could bring snow to the region Sunday night. FOX 5 New York reports that up to 3 inches of snow are possible in New York City, Long Island, and northeastern New Jersey.
