Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the Palestinians, on Saturday, for “unity” in confronting Israel, at the conclusion of his meeting with the head of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, in Istanbul.
Erdogan said, according to a statement by the Turkish presidency: “It is vital that the Palestinians move united in this process.” The strongest response to Israel and the path to victory require unity and integrity.”
Erdogan assured Haniyeh that Turkey would continue its diplomatic efforts to draw the attention of the international community to the injustice to which the Palestinians are subjected, noting that Turkey had implemented a series of sanctions against Israel, including trade restrictions.
The American Wall Street Journal reported that Hamas has contacted at least two countries in the region about transferring its political leaders to them.
The newspaper explained, citing diplomatic sources, that Hamas’ move came as a result of mediators from Egypt and Qatar exerting pressure on the movement to ease the conditions for negotiations with Israel.
She pointed out that the talks are on hold again, with no signs or possibilities for resuming them any time soon, and the lack of trust is growing between Hamas and the negotiators.
Hamas rejected the latest proposal to reach an agreement, saying that any new agreement regarding the hostages must end the Gaza war and include the withdrawal of all Israeli forces.
The mediators’ proposal stipulates the release of 42 detainees in Gaza in exchange for the release of 800 to 900 Palestinian prisoners detained by Israel, the entry of 400 to 500 trucks of food aid daily and the return of displaced persons from northern Gaza to their towns, according to a Hamas source.
