BarcelonaThe intense electoral calendar of the last few months, with municipal elections in Catalonia and general elections called by surprise, had hindered the tempo, but finally the report promoted by the Foment del Treball commission on the future of El Prat airport is about to see the light. As the ARA has learned, these conclusions will be presented towards the end of October after its members began to meet in September of last year to define the different alternatives in the face of a hypothetical expansion of the Catalan infrastructure. Although some voices pointed out that the negotiation to invest Pedro Sánchez could postpone the conclusions, this will not be the case in the end.

The commission set up by the employer and chaired by the president of the Chamber of Contractors of Catalonia, Lluís Moreno, has come up with at least a dozen solutions to resolve the debate surrounding the growth of El Prat. Among these proposals there are some that have already been repeated in the last years of deliberation, such as the extension by 500 or 350 meters of the runway closest to the sea, but there are also others more groundbreaking, such as the construction of a new airport in the area of Vilafranca del Penedès or the maritime runway that was suggested by a group of experts led by the naval engineer Joaquim Coello. Even so, voices consulted by the ARA point out that Foment will not adopt any of the alternatives included in the conclusions and point out that the purpose of the commission has rather been to keep the discussion open to prevent it from dying.

Awaiting the Government-State commission

Questions such as the conservation of the protected natural areas of the Llobregat delta, the increase in pollutant emissions in the midst of a climate emergency or the pressure of mass tourism have crossed the concretion of an airport expansion project that in August of 2021 seemed sealed. In fact, it is most likely that the group promoted by Foment will make a statement before the technical commission between Moncloa and the Generalitat is set up to agree on how to “gain capacity” at the aerodrome. This was one of the points of the agreement between the Government and the PSC to agree the budgets for 2023, but at the moment there have been no moves to constitute this body.

On the other hand, the negotiations for the investiture of Pedro Sánchez also resurrected the old ambition of a Catalan management of the Prat.
