The Food and Drug Control Center issued an explanatory statement regarding what is circulating on social media sites about the presence of high levels of sodium nitrate inside watermelon (Dalaa).
The Center confirmed in its statement that it is following carefully and carefully everything that is traded regarding food materials and commodities traded within the Libyan market.
Regarding the circulating news, the Food and Drug Control Center indicated that through research and tracking the sources of information, it became clear that it has no scientific basis and was not issued by any official body, pointing out that the person authorized to do this in terms of ensuring the safety of food and medicine circulating in the country is the Food and Drug Control Center. Food and medicines.
The center pointed out that the device shown in the pictures spread on social media sites, which is the “Greentest eco” device, is not approved by the regulatory authorities and its source is unknown and is not among the laboratory devices approved by the Food and Drug Control Center.
The center explained that from a procedural standpoint, all chemical and microbial analyzes are carried out in accordance with the Libyan Standard Specification for Watermelon No. 762/2015, and the maximum limits for nitrates in watermelon are not determined in accordance with the European Pollutant Regulations.
According to the center’s statement, from a scientific standpoint, watermelon is composed of a large percentage of water, mineral salts, wood fibers, and sugars. The combination of water, salts, and wood fibers is considered a natural antidote to constipation, and eating too much red watermelon leads to diarrhea.
