Butter has never been as expensive in Germany as it is now. The price rise does not seem to have ended yet.
The price for a 250 gram packet of private label German brand butter has reached a new high. As of this week, butter costs 2.39 euros in supermarkets and discounters. This amount exceeds the previous record price from summer 2022 by 10 cents.
The Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) confirmed that this was the highest price since the founding of the Federal Republic. The prices for branded products have also risen, as the price comparison portal Smhaggle reports. The Federal Association of German Dairy Farmers (BDM) believes further price increases are possible.
The reason for the high price of butter is a weak supply, which meets high demand during the Christmas season. According to BDM, the future price development depends on the quantity of milk delivered and its ingredients. Industry associations had already predicted an increase in butter prices at the end of August.
In 2022, the price of butter has already risen sharply due to the Ukraine war and the energy crisis. In the summer of 2023 it briefly fell to 1.39 euros before rising again. According to the Federal Statistical Office, butter was 41 percent more expensive in August 2024 than in 2020.
In addition, the number of dairy cows and farms has been declining for years. In 2023, there were still around 3.7 million animals and almost 50,600 businesses in Germany.
