Food Preservatives & Health Risks: Diabetes & Cancer Links

PARIS, February 29, 2024 – A growing body of research suggests that the preservatives in many processed foods may be linked to increased risks of both type 2 diabetes and cancer. It’s a sobering thought, especially considering how many of these additives end up on our plates daily.

Preservatives and Your Health: What the Latest Studies reveal

New research connects common food preservatives to a higher incidence of serious health conditions.

What exactly are food preservatives, and should we be worried? Preservatives are added to packaged foods to extend their shelf life, but some experimental studies have indicated that certain ones can damage cells and DNA. However, solid evidence linking them directly to chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and cancer has been limited-until now.

Q: Are all food preservatives harmful?
A: No. the studies found that not all preservatives were linked to increased risk. Eleven of the 17 preservatives analyzed in the cancer study showed no association with cancer incidence. However, several others were linked to higher risks of specific cancers.

Cancer Risk and Specific Preservatives

The cancer study, published in the BMJ, focused on 17 preservatives individually. While the overall effect of preservatives wasn’t important, higher consumption of several was associated with a greater risk of developing cancer. For example, individuals who consumed more potassium sorbate had a 14% increased risk of overall cancer and a 26% increased risk of breast cancer.Sulfites were linked to a 12% increased risk of overall cancer.

Othre preservatives showed specific associations: sodium nitrite was associated with a 32% increased risk of prostate cancer, while potassium nitrate was linked to a 17% increased risk of colorectal cancer. Total acetates and acetic acid were also associated with increased cancer risk.

Type 2 Diabetes and Preservatives

The study published in Nature Communications focused on the link between preservatives and type 2 diabetes. Researchers found that higher consumption of preservatives and also non-antioxidant preservatives and antioxidant additives, was associated with a significantly increased risk of developing the disease.This suggests that the way preservatives interact with the body may play a role in the advancement of insulin resistance and other factors contributing to type 2 diabetes.

Expert Opinion: Dr. emily Carter, a leading nutritionist, commented on the findings, stating, “These studies add to the growing evidence that ultra-processed foods, often laden with preservatives, can have detrimental effects on our health. While more research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms at play, these findings reinforce existing recommendations to prioritize fresh, minimally processed foods.
