Food sovereignty: why French chicken is failing

A major poultry producing country, France has fallen behind since the turn of the 2000s, so much so that today it must buy half of its consumption abroad, compared to only 20% twenty years ago. This represents more than 1.5 billion euros of imports each year.

However, the French have never eaten so much chicken: consumption has doubled in twenty years, reaching 22.5 kg per capita in 2022, behind pork and, now, ahead of beef. But consumption patterns have changed. No more whole chicken, the famous Sunday chicken, a specialty of French production, often under a quality label. France finds itself lacking in competitiveness in the most sought-after segment: chicken fillets consumed in out-of-home catering.
