Wayne Rooney’s career on the sidelines is still taking a turn for the worse. The former Manchester United striker turned coach was sacked after less than three months at the helm of Birmingham (English D2). Appointed last October 11, the Englishman had nevertheless signed until June 2027. But his team’s new defeat at Leeds this Monday (3-0) confirmed his future on the bench of his team.

After managing only 15 games, the “tireless Wayne Rooney” posted a very disappointing record of two wins, four draws and nine defeats, an average of 0.67 points per game. 20th in the Championship, Birmingham is only six points ahead of the first relegation for a team which is not supposed to play for survival at all.

Three clubs, three failures

Announced by the English press this Tuesday morning, his departure was confirmed by his club in a press release : “Despite their efforts, the results did not live up to the expectations expressed. (…) Unfortunately, Wayne’s time with us did not go as planned and we decided to take a different direction. »

For Wayne Rooney, it’s a new adventure that goes wrong on the sidelines. At 38, the Red Devils legend has already managed three clubs since his career ended in 2021: Derby County, DC United in MLS and Birmingham, each time ending in bitter failures.

In the Championship, his first on the sidelines ended with relegation to English D3 with Derby County due in particular to 21 penalty points and a catastrophic financial situation which was not attributable to him. Leaving for the States -United, he failed to reach the playoffs with Washington, before failing again in Birmingham. 2024 is off to a bad start for Rooney.
