On the way to a comeback? Former US President Donald Trump is expected to announce today (Tuesday) that he will run in the presidential elections in 2024 – as reported in the US media. This morning Trump provided another hint of this when he wrote on the “Truth” social network that he “hopes that this day will become one of the most important days in the country’s history.”

Trump’s expected announcement comes amid the Republican Party’s disappointing results in last week’s midterm elections. Although many estimated that the Republicans would return to the majority in Congress, in practice the Democrats maintained control of the Senate, and the Republican majority in the House of Representatives was not yet guaranteed either – and is expected to be only a minimal majority. In addition, many of the candidates Trump supported lost their races for Congress or other offices.

Trump hoped to use the momentum of the victory in the midterm elections to leverage his campaign on the way to the White House, but following the series of losses, many of his advisers urged him to wait until next month. Despite this, the assessment in the US is that Trump is still interested in announcing his candidacy now, mainly to bypass the one seen as his main opponent in the primaries – Florida Governor Ron de Santis, who won another term and is very popular in the Republican Party.
