The Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights announced that hundreds of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were evacuated from camps they set up in front of the headquarters of United Nations organizations in Tunis.

Forum spokesman Ramadan Ben Omar said, “At least 300 migrants, including refugees and asylum seekers, in addition to women and children, were forcefully evacuated last night.”

He pointed out that “the police evacuated three temporary camps that had been set up since last summer in front of the headquarters of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration, as well as in a park in the Beheira area in Tunis.”

Between 500 and 700 people resided in these temporary camps, after many of them were expelled from their homes and jobs in the months that followed a speech given by President Kais Saied in February 2023, in which he condemned the arrival of hordes of illegal immigrants from sub-Saharan African countries, describing it as a conspiracy to change the demographic composition. For the country.
