Leader of Opposition and Jatiya Party Chairman Gholam Mohammad Quader MP has expressed anger over the decision to cut 3,000 trees on the road from Kumarkhali Dambazar to Madulia in Kushtia.

In a statement on Thursday (April 25), he called for the cancellation of the tree cutting decision. At the same time, Golam Mohammad Quader called on the concerned to form an investigation committee regarding the cutting of trees on the same road in the past days.

Chairman of Jatiya Party said in the statement, “Earlier trees were stolen from the forest, now robbery has started in the forest. For the forest robbers, the environment is a serious disaster.’ He called upon the concerned to identify the bonkhekos and forest robbers and face them with the law.

The opposition party leader said, according to the media, the forest department has cut 10,000 trees on that road in 2023. Recently, the authorities cut down 3 thousand more trees on the same road. Ignoring the opinions of the local public and environmentalists, the forest department has numbered about 3 thousand more trees to be cut on that road. It cannot be a more suicidal decision. The country should have 25 percent forests to protect the balance of the environment. But, we have less than 9 percent. Due to the destruction of forests, the country has become uninhabitable today. In the severe heat wave that people live in today, having enough plants would have provided some relief.

In a statement, Golam Mohammad Quader said that thousands of trees have already been cut down to build roads and buildings in the capital. The capital has become uninhabitable due to unplanned and suicidal decisions. According to environmentalists, the capital is supposed to have 20 per cent forest cover but only 2 per cent. It is possible to develop and widen roads without cutting trees. Therefore, deforestation should be stopped for no reason.
