Arendal, Norway – Four former employees of Mack, one of Norway’s largest breweries, are now charting a new course in the brewing industry – but this time, from a base in Arendal, a coastal town in the south of the country. The unlikely relocation of brewing expertise from the Arctic north to the southern coast highlights a fascinating chapter for these seasoned professionals.

But, in 2012, the main brewing operations were relocated from Tromsø to Nordkjosbotn, approximately 55 kilometers (34 miles) away, to a more modern facility. Despite this shift, Mack maintains a presence in Tromsø with its historic pub, Ølhallen, recognized as the oldest pub in the city.
From Arctic Roots to Southern Shores
The decision of these four former Mack employees to establish Arendal Bryggeri represents a continuation of their brewing expertise, albeit in a new geographical context. A Shift in Operations and Continued Innovation
The relocation of the main brewing operations to Nordkjosbotn in 2012 was a strategic move aimed at modernizing production and improving efficiency. Despite the move, Mack continues to invest in its brand and its presence in Tromsø, with Ølhallen remaining a popular destination for beer enthusiasts. The brewery also operates Kjeller 5, a shop in Tromsø that sells a wide selection of Norwegian beers and homebrewing supplies.
The current brewmaster at Mack is Rune Lennart, as of July 11, 2023. The company employs 105 people, demonstrating its continued importance as an employer in Northern Norway.
