The former Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, thanked, this Friday, in Lisbon, Angola’s partnership and support during his mandate, which symbolized an important moment in the strengthening of cooperation between the two countries.

António Costa expressed his gratitude during an audience granted by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, in Portugal, on the sidelines of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the 25th April Revolution.

Speaking to the press, he said it was a courtesy meeting that served to personally thank the Angolan Head of State for this collaboration.

He anticipated excellent relations with the new Executive following the legislative elections last March, since cooperation with Angola is strategic, regardless of who is in the Government.

“Relations with the new Government will continue, governments change, but the relationship with Angola continues as if nothing had happened, always in the interest of reinforcing what was done previously, with new ideas and projects”, he stated.

He also highlighted the participation of President João Lourenço in the festivities marking the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, a moment that he considered very symbolic, to celebrate a freedom also achieved by former African colonies.

Therefore, António Costa praised the Angolan statesman’s speech at the ceremony commemorating the date, held at the Belém Palace.

He stated that, without the struggle of liberation movements in the former Portuguese colonies, the dictatorship in Portugal would have taken longer.

“It was a fatal blow to end fascism and promote the independence of former colonies”, he highlighted.

António Costa, for now away from politics, said that he will take advantage of the time to take a legal arbitration course and collaborate as a commentator on a television channel, and that he will continue to be linked to Angola.

The Portuguese politician was head of the Portuguese Government for eight years.

During his visit to Angola, in 2023, 13 agreements were signed, with emphasis on the Strategic Cooperation Plan 2023-2027.ART
