The Four Hills Tournament begins in a week and a half – and the Germans are starting with great ambitions. An incident is now causing difficulties at the fourth competition location. There is help from Germany.

Around a week and a half before the start of the Four Hills Tournament, the consequences of a snow avalanche are causing problems for the organizers in Bischofshofen. Because nets were torn, an avalanche slid into the run. The landing slope and the run-out of the Paul-Außerleitner-Schanze were damaged and now need to be repaired.

The grand finale of the Four Hills Tournament is traditionally scheduled to take place there on January 6th. The prestige event around the turn of the year begins on December 28th with the qualification in Oberstdorf.

“This has never happened to us before. We had a lot of snow, then it rained heavily. The load on the networks must have become too great,” Manfred Schützenhofer, President of the Bischofshofen Ski Club, was quoted as saying by the “Kronen Zeitung” from Austria. Schützenhofer said about the financial damage: “You can’t say that yet. It will be a six-figure sum.”

Klingenthal helps Bischofshofen

Nevertheless, he can give the all-clear: From his point of view, jumping on tour is not at risk. “Since Monday morning we have been clearing the areas again with the excavator and pulling the nets back up. A truck also drove to Klingenthal in Vogtland, Saxony, today. They lend us three large snow nets. We will jump as normal on January 6th. We’ll get there,” he told ORF.

For the German ski jumpers, the start of the tour is about showing their excellent form from the previous World Cup winter at the traditional event. Three athletes are among the favorites, as Austrian Stefan Kraft is followed by Andreas Wellinger, Pius Paschke and Karl Geiger in the overall World Cup. It has now been 22 years since a German, Sven Hannawald, last won the Four Hills Tournament.
