In the first televised interview on the conservative Fox News channel with the US presidential candidate, Kamala Harris had a heated exchange with the moderator. Moderator Bret Baier started the conversation with the issue of immigration, which was central to the election campaign, and he interrupted the Democrat several times.
Harris got right on the defensive at the start, but recovered as the conversation progressed. The interview was far more contentious than the Democrats’ previous conversations with US broadcasters.
Heated mood regarding questions about migration
Baier pressed the Democrats directly with several questions about immigration. As Vice President of the USA, Harris is responsible, among other things, for the issue of immigration. Her Republican opponent Donald Trump repeatedly attacks the 59-year-old on this issue and accuses her of being a failure.
During the election campaign, the Democrats visited the US border with Mexico to get an idea of the situation there. “Can I finish the answer?” Harris asked repeatedly and Baier interrupted her during the interview. It is right that the American people want to have a discussion about immigration before the election.
But what people didn’t want were “political games,” Harris said, referring to Trump. The Democrat was flustered and tried to oppose him.
Harris: Migration system in the broken United States of America
Baier asked Harris, for example, if she was apologizing to the families of women murdered by migrants. “First of all, let me say that these are tragic cases. There is no doubt about that,” replied US Vice President Harris. The US immigration system has been broken for a long time. Congress is responsible for fixing it, Harris said, accusing Republicans and Trump of blocking solutions.
Baier directed the conversation on the topic of gender reassignment surgery and transgender rights, which conservatives have repeatedly politicized. The moderator asked the US vice president if taxpayer money should be used for this. Harris responded that Trump was spending millions of dollars on ads “to create a sense of fear among voters because he does not have a plan in this election that focuses on the needs of the American people.”
Harris is far from Biden
As the current vice president, Harris is repeatedly blamed for government mistakes during the election campaign, including several times in a Fox News interview. “When did you first notice the appearance of President Biden’s mental abilities?” asked Baier. Harris paused and then answered: She met with Biden at least once a week for three and a half years and she had no worries.
The Democrat tried to direct the conversation to her opponent Trump: The American people are worried about the former president, Harris said. Those who knew him – even his former White House aides – considered the Republican “unfit and dangerous” and said “he would never be president of the United States again.”
Asked what differentiates her from Biden, Harris deliberately absented herself: “Let me be clear that my presidency will not continue to be Joe Biden’s.” Like all new people in the office, she will bring her life experience, professional experience and “fresh, new ideas” with her. She also represents a new generation.
Trump: Fox News has become “weak and soft.”
Trump’s campaign team called the interview a fiasco and described Harris as “angry and defensive.” Trump had already attacked moderator Baier before the interview aired. He accused Baier on his online platform Truth Social of not attacking the left hard enough.
“I would have preferred to see a journalist who asked tougher questions, but Fox has become so weak and soft on the Democrats.”
