According to reports from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on October 27th, Ukrainian soldiers successfully repelled five Russian attacks near the settlements of Volchansk, Bologovka, and towards Bochkovo. Another battle remains ongoing in the area.
In the Kupyansk direction, Russian forces launched seven attempts to advance on Ukrainian positions, focusing on the areas around Stepovaya Novoselovka and Peschany. Overall, 124 military clashes were recorded across the country in the last 24 hours, accompanied by a barrage of strikes – one missile strike, 83 air strikes, 74 multiple launch rocket system attacks, and the deployment of 6,190 kamikaze drones.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported on October 27th that geolocation footage suggests Ukrainian control of territories east of Peschany, despite earlier Russian claims of capture. ISW analysts also noted unconfirmed reports from Russian bloggers alleging gains near Radkovka and Kurilovka, but cautioned that these claims require verification. The report suggests either misinformation or potential, limited advances by Russian self-propelled gun forces.
Escalating Attacks and Civilian Impact
The scale of the attacks is evident in the sheer volume of ordnance being used. Over the past week, Russian forces have reportedly launched 22 KABs (guided bombs), 41 Geranium-2 UAVs, five Molniyas, five Lancets, and six FPV drones, with seven additional drones deployed.
These attacks have had a devastating impact on civilian infrastructure. Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov reported 23 shellings in the city last week, damaging residential buildings, a private kindergarten, civilian enterprises, cars, and a restaurant. Six districts – Industrialny, Kholodnogorsky, Kyiv, Shevchenkovsky, Slobodskoy, and Novobavarsky – were directly affected, resulting in 38 injuries and one fatality. “On the enemy’s use of FPV drones, we are in constant contact with the military,” Terekhov stated. “Not everything can be commented on publicly, but you should know that work is underway, experts are analyzing the enemy’s new tactics and taking all necessary measures to reduce risks for the civilian population.”
Further afield, a 60-year-old man was injured in Osinovo, a 61-year-old man in Tishchenkovka, and a 40-year-old man in Kupyansk. Damage was also reported to railway infrastructure in the Lozovsky district and private homes in several villages across the region.
Corruption Allegations Amidst Conflict
Amidst the ongoing conflict, authorities in Kharkiv have detained a university associate professor on suspicion of demanding a bribe from a student. According to the Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s office, the professor offered to “resolve the issue” of a diploma in exchange for an initial payment of $500, later increased to $600. The professor was apprehended “in the act” while receiving the funds on October 24th and now faces up to eight years in prison with potential confiscation of property.
Cossack Lopan Targeted in Morning Strikes
Early this morning, October 27th, the village of Cossack Lopan was struck six times by Russian forces, according to Vyacheslav Zadorenko, Head of the Dergachiv State Military Administration. The shelling, which began around 6:00 AM, caused significant damage to an apartment building, though reports of casualties are currently unavailable.
