The victim, an experienced employee aged around fifty, tried to raise the alarm by making a call, in vain, said the same source.

The Narbonne public prosecutor’s office confirmed the opening of an investigation.

The accident took place around 6 a.m. Monday. The victim, employed by a subcontractor of the cement manufacturer Lafarge, the transport company Audouy, had gotten out of his vehicle to “ensure the unloading of the goods”, described the source close to the case.

“Expertises will be carried out to determine the causes of this death,” indicated this same source, adding that the labor inspectorate had been jointly involved.

At the same time, Lafarge Holcim France “mobilized its workplace safety department which is collaborating in the investigation to establish the facts and ensure that such an extremely rare accident cannot happen again,” indicated a Lafarge representative. Holcim France to AFP.

“He was unloading a truck of gypsum, there are no direct witnesses, which is normal for such unloading,” he said.

“There is great emotion on the site, where the director of the cement plant brought the teams together for a moment of reflection on Monday afternoon,” he added.
