France to raise pension age; Approval of action

by time news

PARIS – The measure to increase the pension age has been approved in France. The Constitutional Council approved raising the pension age from 62 to 64. The action comes amid massive protests in the country against increasing the pension age.

In March, the government decided to use special powers to raise the pension age without a vote. The Constitutional Council met on Friday evening and approved the decision to increase the pension age. Protesters had also camped in front of the building where the meeting was taking place. But gathering in this area is prohibited till Saturday.

The reason for the protest is the requirement to work for 2 more years to get full pension. A motion of no confidence was brought against President Emmanuel Macron for allegedly taking the decision without the approval of the Parliament. The protesting organizations also demanded the resignation of Makro. Makro says that decisions like raising the pension age should be made to make the country’s economy more competitive. The country has a low birth rate and high life expectancy.
