Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57 following a brief illness. His family announced the death in the early hours of Friday.

The death of the prominent role-interpreter was confirmed by the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Mr Abubakar Yakubu, in a Facebook post shared during the wee hours of Friday. Over Three Decades on Screen and Stage

Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents hailing from Imo State, southeast Nigeria, Francis Ogide Duru grew up abroad before moving back to his home country for higher education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, graduating in 1996 after building early professional experience in television and theatre.

His screen career began in 1989 with Missing Mark, a production directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko. But household recognition arrived when he starred as Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the 1995 action-comedy produced by the late Amaka Igwe.

That breakout role established his reputation across the Nigerian film industry, leading to decades of steady work across dozens of titles. His extensive filmography includes appearances in Blood Money, Stigma, and Mboputa, alongside Eagle Wings, Nnenda, The Good Husband, and Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons. Beyond performing in front of the camera, he worked as a film director, producer, writer, master of ceremonies, and television personality.

Duru Led the Actors Guild and Won Industry Awards

Within the professional community, Duru took on institutional responsibilities, serving as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010. His contributions earned him industry accolades, including the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) prize at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards for Mboputa, as well as a nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards that same year. In recognition of his positive influence on young people, he received the United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in 2007.

His death arrives months after he publicly pushed back against unverified rumors regarding his health. Following the circulation of social media footage in June that showed him looking frail and caused widespread concern among fans, the actor dismissed the claims as fabricated and malicious via a video shared on his Instagram account.

Duru is survived by his wife, Adokiye—whom he married in 2003—and their four children. The family previously suffered a profound tragedy in August 2024 with the death of their 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi. When speaking about the loss publicly in January 2025, the actor reflected that the painful experience ultimately deepened his faith in God.
