The prosecutor began by addressing the recent questions against him, ensuring that he will not seek to get into more controversies, especially with the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro.. Barbosa emphasized that the Prosecutor’s Office has no interest in affecting the presidentsince by constitutional order it cannot investigate it. He clarified that any investigation related to the president is the exclusive responsibility of the Impeachment Committee of the House of Representatives.
In a conciliatory tone, Barbosa stressed that Colombia is a country with solid and democratic institutions, and that it is essential to respect the established periods. «It is not a country of coups, it is not a country of institutional ruptures. Regarding his succession, Barbosa announced that Martha Mancera, current Deputy Prosecutor, will remain in charge of the Prosecutor’s Office while the Supreme Court elects a new prosecutor.. He expressed his desire to deliver a transitional Prosecutor’s Office, ready to continue the important work of administering justice in the country.
Barbosa also called for institutional respect and tranquility during this selection process, pointing out that “justice cannot be the object of attack by any sector.” He urged that decisions be made in an atmosphere of calm and respect, away from demonstrations that could hinder due process.
