blackhawks’ Nazar Signs $46.2 Million Extension: A rising Star and a Trade Revisited

A staggering $46.2 million. That figure represents a meaningful investment in the future of chicago Blackhawks forward Frank Nazar, who recently secured a seven-year contract extension despite limited NHL experience. The deal underscores the increasing financial stakes in professional hockey and raises questions about player value in a rapidly evolving market.

recent complex negotiations, such as those involving Kirill Kaprizov in Minnesota and Lane Hutson, have highlighted the challenges of establishing player worth in a system where even substantial offers aren’t always enough. Nazar, however, appears to have bypassed those concerns, solidifying his long-term future with the blackhawks before facing the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.

The forward’s current entry-level contract extends through the end of the season, but the new extension provides financial security through the 2030-2031 season. The timing of the contract is notable, as Nazar has played just 56 NHL games over two seasons. He demonstrated promising development at the end of the 2024-2025 season, recording 16 points in his last 27 games, and then lead the United States to a gold medal at the Senior World Championship with 12 points in 10 games.

“I started last season in the American League, I got called up and I played 53 games,” Nazar recalled after the Hawks’ morning practice at the United centre. “come summer, and I am offered a contract of this importance after playing 56 games. Growing up, I had never seen a number like that. I’m here to play hockey, have fun and win. That’s the significant thing. We’ve reached the point where this number allows me to do all of this and take care of my family in the future. I can do all that and I give us a chance to win, by being a good team guy. So that removed the question. I can just play hockey, I’m here for eight years, there’s no worries.”

Early indications suggest the Blackhawks’ investment is already paying dividends. After just two games, Nazar has three points, averages 20:36 of ice time per game, and is featured on both special teams.

“These are huge responsibilities,” acknowledged Jeff Blashill, head coach of the Hawks. “His speed is special and he can pass and score at high speed. He will have a very big impact this season.” Blashill further emphasized Nazar’s impact, noting his speed makes him a “constant threat” on the power play and his potential to excel on the penalty kill with improved faceoffs.

Veteran Nick Foligno shared his outlook on Nazar’s rapid ascent, acknowledging the young player’s game that drew criticism from Jeff Blashill.

Kirby Dach continues to progress toward regaining his optimal form after undergoing a second surgery on the same knee during the offseason. “He improves from match to match. He plays with honest intentions and focuses on what is asked. He will become more and more comfortable,” St-Louis stated.

Ultimately, the story of Nazar and Dach is one of intertwined futures. While Dach still has time to establish himself as a key player in Montreal, the Blackhawks are already reaping the rewards of their draft-day gamble. The coming seasons will reveal whether this trade will be remembered as a shrewd move by Chicago or a missed prospect for both franchises.
