The journalist has just been awarded the 2023 Political Book Prize for his Intimate History of the Fifth Republic – The Belle Époque (Gallimard), volume 2 of a trilogy which analyzes half a century of personal archives.

Journalist Franz-Olivier Giesbert was awarded the 2023 Political Book Prize on Saturday for his Intimate History of the Fifth Republic – The Belle Époque (Gallimard), volume 2 of a trilogy which dissects 50 years of personal archives.

In this book, Franz-Olivier Giesbert explores the 1970s, a decade marked by the mandates of Georges Pompidou and Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, by the advent to the left of François Mitterrand, in a context of economic growth but also violent oil shocks .

This book was selected by a jury of journalists, chaired by former minister Roselyne Bachelot, against two other finalists: Journey to the end of the left (Stock), journalist Laurent Telo and We will have tried everything (Fayard), political scientist Chloé Morin.

Last year, Richard Malka, the lawyer for Charlie Hebdo and the young Mila, had won this prize for The right to piss off God (Grasset), a written version of his argument at the trial of the Islamist attack against the satirical newspaper. Finally, Faced with a holy war (Threshold) by the philosopher Sylviane Agacinski won the deputies’ prize, whose jury is headed by the president of the Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet.
