A forthcoming lyric book and a recently released biography are stirring fresh conversation about the life and legacy of Freddie Mercury, promising unseen insights into the creative process of the iconic Queen frontman and raising questions about a previously unknown chapter in his personal life.
The lyric book, titled A Life in Lyrics, scheduled for release by HarperCollins on September 1, 2024 – just days before what would have been Mercury’s 80th birthday – will feature previously unreleased song fragments and alternative versions of Queen’s greatest hits, including abandoned verses for “Bohemian Rhapsody” and drafts of “Don’t Stop Me Now.” The material originates from Mercury’s personal notebooks and has been released by Mary Austin, his former fiancée and lifelong friend.
Austin, who inherited Mercury’s home and entire creative archive following his death in 1991, discovered the lyrical drafts while cataloging the contents of Garden Lodge in early 2023. She described finding the lyrics on loose sheets and in plain notebooks that “entirely belied the wonders within.”
“I hope that by sharing his manuscripts now, contextualised with fresh insights and a sprinkling of vignettes of our lives together, I will illuminate the remarkable creative force of my dear friend for the enjoyment of everyone he continues to delight and inspire, even after all these years,” Austin stated. The book will also be illustrated with images from Mercury’s personal archive, offering fans a deeper connection to his artistry.
A Lifelong Bond & Creative Legacy
Mercury and Austin’s relationship began in 1969, culminating in a proposal on Christmas Day in 1973. Though their engagement ended three years later, they remained close confidantes throughout Mercury’s life. He openly discussed his relationships with both men and women, identifying as bisexual.
Austin inherited approximately half of Mercury’s estimated £9 million estate, a testament to the depth of their enduring friendship. She believes the handwritten notes offer “a window into his brilliant, creative mind” and have evoked cherished memories.
Claims of a Secret Daughter Divide Fans
Adding another layer to the unfolding narrative, the recently published biography Love, Freddie by Lesley-Ann Jones alleges that Mercury had a secret daughter, a claim unknown even to his closest associates. The book centers around a woman, identified only as “B,” now 48 years old, who claims Mercury was her father.
According to the book, “B” asserts in a handwritten letter that Mercury and she shared “a very close and loving relationship from the moment I was born and throughout the final 15 years of his life.” She alleges the child was conceived during a brief affair between Mercury and the wife of a close friend in 1976. “B” further claims Mercury entrusted her with 17 journals detailing the final years of his life, which Jones describes as “the closest thing to a Freddie Mercury autobiography that the world will ever know.”
However, Austin has vehemently denied any knowledge of a secret child. “The truth is that I am simply not the guardian of such a secret,” she said. “I’ve never known of any child, or of any diaries. If Freddie had indeed had a child without me knowing anything about it, that would be astonishing to me.”
The claims have sparked considerable debate among fans and those who knew Mercury, highlighting the complexities surrounding his personal life and the enduring fascination with his story. The release of A Life in Lyrics promises to offer a new, intimate perspective on the artist, while the controversy surrounding Love, Freddie ensures that the conversation surrounding Freddie Mercury’s life will continue for years to come.
