Holiday Travel Just Got Easier: Airlines Expand Free In-Flight Entertainment Options
As the holiday travel season descends, airlines are increasingly offering a welcome distraction from potential delays and crowded terminals: expanded in-flight entertainment. Beyond the standard free Wi-Fi, many carriers are now providing access to major streaming and live TV platforms, often without requiring a paid subscription.
Traveling can be stressful, but these entertainment upgrades aim to make the journey more enjoyable. “Passengers are looking for ways to stay connected and entertained during flights,” noted one industry analyst, “and airlines are responding with increasingly robust offerings.”
Delta: Anime, YouTube, and Classic TV
Delta is bolstering its in-flight entertainment with a diverse lineup. Passengers can enjoy a curated selection of shows and movies on demand, including beloved classics like The Golden Girls and The Office, alongside recent hits such as The Gilded Age and What We Do In The Shadows. But the offerings don’t stop there.
Delta passengers now have ad-free access to a selection of popular YouTube creators, including Mr. Beast, Nick DiGiovanni, and Michelle Khare, as well as YouTube podcasts and music playlists. The airline also features Paramount Plus, offering shows like Cheers, I Love Lucy, Landman, 1923, and Tulsa King. Anime fans will be pleased to learn that a curated selection of programming from Crunchyroll is available on every Delta flight. SkyMiles Members can even sign up for a free 24-hour trial to stream Crunchyroll’s full catalog of over 2,000 titles after their flight.
JetBlue: A Pioneer in In-Flight Entertainment
JetBlue has long been a leader in providing in-flight entertainment. All flights feature seatback screens with at least 18 channels of free, live access to DirecTV. Beyond live TV, passengers can enjoy select Peacock original shows and movies on touchscreen-enabled aircraft.
The entertainment doesn’t end there. Every JetBlue flight within the continental US offers free access to over 100 channels of SiriusXM Radio. Passengers can also stream a selection of Audible titles, and new Audible subscribers are eligible for two free months of the service.
American Airlines: Streaming Variety
American Airlines’ in-flight entertainment includes a rotating list of free TV shows and movies. Passengers can also stream Apple TV content on their seatback screens or personal devices. If the plane is equipped with Viasat Wi-Fi, free access to Apple Music is included, with a two-month trial available for activation during the flight.
For shorter entertainment bursts, select American Airlines flights offer up to 30 minutes of TikTok viewing. Families traveling with young children will appreciate the addition of Lingokids, offering 10 hours of educational content for children aged 8 and under, starting December 1.
United: Bluetooth Connectivity and Premium Streaming
United Airlines offers DirecTV on most flights within the continental US, with over 100 live channels available. A key feature for United passengers is the ability to pair their Bluetooth headphones with the seatback entertainment system.
United’s “United Private Screening” service provides access to a selection of HBO Max and Apple TV shows and movies. Passengers can also enjoy curated playlists, podcasts, and audiobooks from Spotify.
Air Canada: Live TV and Disney+ for Canadian Travelers
For those traveling in or around Canada, Air Canada stands out as the only major Canadian airline offering live TV, including a wide range of US and Canadian networks. In addition to live TV, passengers can access Apple TV and Disney Plus, featuring Pixar films, the Star Wars franchise, and Avatar.
Air Canada passengers can also enjoy free access to Audible audiobooks and, through December 31, can activate a free two-month trial to Apple Fitness. While legroom may be limited, passengers can utilize the service’s meditation features during their flight.
As airlines continue to compete for passenger loyalty, in-flight entertainment is becoming an increasingly important differentiator. These expanded offerings provide a welcome respite for travelers navigating the often-challenging holiday season.
