A beloved holiday tradition returns to Akron this December with free screenings of the classic films “Elf” and “The Polar Express” at the Akron Civic Theatre on Sunday, Dec. 14. The event, sponsored by Wayside Furniture, promises a festive experience for all ages, complete with complimentary popcorn and engaging pre-show activities.
A Double Feature of Holiday Cheer
The afternoon will begin with a 2 p.m. showing of the 2003 comedy “Elf,” starring Will Ferrell as Buddy, a human raised as an elf who embarks on a journey to New York City to find his biological father. Rated PG, the film’s heartwarming story and comedic timing have cemented its place as a modern Christmas staple.
Following “Elf,” the 2004 animated adventure “The Polar Express” will be screened at 6 p.m. Based on the acclaimed children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg and featuring the voice talents of Tom Hanks in multiple roles, the film follows a young boy’s magical train ride to the North Pole, exploring themes of belief and self-discovery. Attendees of the 6 p.m. showing will enjoy complimentary hot cocoa beforehand, adding to the immersive experience.
Festive Activities and Ticket Information
Doors to the Akron Civic Theatre will open one hour prior to each screening, allowing attendees ample time to settle in and participate in themed costume contests. Participants dressed as characters from “Elf” or “The Polar Express” will compete for a $500 gift card from Wayside Furniture, awarded to the best-dressed individual or group.
While admission to the screenings is free, tickets are required and can be obtained at Wayside Furniture, located at 1367 Canton Road, Akron, or at the theater box office at 182 S. Main St. Both locations will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
