Title: Bangkok Offers Free Pneumococcal Vaccination for Children Under 2 Years Old

In honor of World Pneumonia Day 2023, the Department of Health in Bangkok is inviting parents to bring their children under 2 years of age to receive free pneumococcal vaccination (PCV vaccine) at all 69 Public Health Service Centers. This initiative aims to reduce the incidence of pneumonia, middle ear disease, and meningitis caused by pneumococcus.

Pneumococcal infection is caused by a bacterial infection and can lead to serious health complications, including bloodstream infections, meningitis, and severe pneumonia. The severity of the disease depends on the organ that is infected, with symptoms ranging from fever, cough, and shortness of breath to high fever, severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, and stiff necks.

In Thailand, the vaccine to prevent pneumococcal infection has not yet been included in the country’s Basic Immunization Plan (EPI Program), making it expensive to access. However, the PCV vaccine provided by Bangkok is highly effective, safe, and certified by the World Health Organization (WHO) standard to prevent diseases caused by pneumococcal infection.

The free vaccination services are available for young children aged 2 – 23 months at all 69 health offices spread throughout Bangkok, starting November 2022. Vaccinations will be provided in the Well Baby Clinic every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

For more information, parents can contact the Communicable Disease Control Division at the Health Department or visit a public health service center near their home.

This initiative aims to protect young children from the devastating effects of pneumococcal infection, ultimately contributing to a healthier and safer community.]
