CSUN VITA Clinic Expands Free Tax Services Across Los Angeles County
California State University, Northridge’s (CSUN) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is bolstering its commitment to financial empowerment, expanding its free tax readiness services to 18 locations throughout Los Angeles County. This expansion aims to assist a greater number of low-income taxpayers navigating the complexities of the tax season.
The CSUN VITA Clinic, housed within the David nazarian College of Business and Economics, provides complimentary income tax assistance to individuals and families earning $67,000 or less annually, with services extended to those who do not speak English. Free tax preparation will be available beginning the last week of January and will continue through the filing deadline of April 15.
“VITA boasts a remarkable 50-year history of dedicated community and student service,” stated rafael Efrat, bookstein chair in taxation and director of the CSUN VITA Clinic. “It holds the distinction of being the first academic institution in the nation to offer free tax preparation to low-income taxpayers, and we’ve consistently built upon that legacy, expanding our impact year after year.”
The central hub for tax preparation is located in CSUN’s Bookstein Hall, situated near the intersection of Plummer Street and Etiwanda Avenue. Taxpayers can receive assistance Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended hours until 10 p.m. on Thursdays.
Beyond the main campus location, 17 additional sites are strategically positioned across the LA area within public libraries, family resource centers, and community hubs.A new partnership with the Greater LA Agency on Deafness (GLAD) will see CSUN students trained to provide specialized tax assistance to deaf and hard-of-hearing community members.
A extensive list of free tax preparation sites includes Las Palmas Park, San Fernando Public Library, Sun Valley Public Library, Valley Plaza Branch Library, pacoima public Library, Inclusive Action for the City, Hollywood Regional Library, Mid-Valley Regional library, Grandview Library, YMCA West Valley, YMCA Mid Valley, Meet Each Need with Dignity (MEND), and the North Hollywood Public Library. VITA services will also be available at the West LA Veteran Center, staffed by CSUN veteran students certified to assist fellow veterans with their tax filings.
Individuals seeking assistance are strongly encouraged to schedule appointments online or by calling (818)-677-3600 quickly to secure a time slot.
The program relies on the dedication of over 300 trained student volunteers, who gain valuable practical experience while serving the community.at the conclusion of the tax season, ten outstanding volunteers will be recognized with a $1,000 scholarship.
“The Bookstein endowment, established by Harvey and Harriet Bookstein, is instrumental in supporting these scholarships,” Efrat explained. “Students not only master the technical aspects of tax preparation, equipping them and their families with essential financial knowlege, but also develop crucial soft skills – leadership, communication, and interpersonal abilities – that will benefit them throughout their careers.”
